Dr. Sanduk Ruit, co-founder of the Himalayan Cataract Project, has won Bahrain`s highest civilian honour, the ISA Award for Service to Humanity.

 

The honour comes with a gold medal, a certificate of merit, and a cash prize of $1 million USD. In distant eye camps, Dr. Ruit is a pioneer in providing top-notch microsurgical procedures. He enabled nations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America to afford and have access to contemporary eye care. Since he saved 1,20,000 people`s eyesight who would have otherwise gone blind in the absence of treatment, he is affectionately known as the "God of Sight."

 

Dr Ruit has trained more than 650 doctors, teaching them to cure preventable blindness. He is the recipient of the Padma Shri Award by the GoI, The National Order of Merit of Bhutan as well as the Ramon Magsaysay Award. Prime Minister of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal `Prachanda` congratulated senior ophthalmologist Ruit for receiving prestigious Bahrain’s ISA award.
